Your research is probably complicated, but the way you introduce it to others shouldn’t be. In this workshop, we’ll talk about strategies for preparing the “short stuff”: the descriptive overviews of scholarly work one should keep on hand or in front of mind. Useful for email introductions, interviews, meetings with potential collaborators, and impromptu chats at conferences or archives, these brief but high-level descriptions of your work are worth crafting before you’re put on the spot. In addition to discussing what one should include in an abstract, we will dedicate time during the session to drafting and workshopping elevator pitches. During an optional follow-up session a few weeks after this workshop, we will conduct a “peer review” of one another’s reworked pitches.
